Cubs visit the SPCA

By Ettioné Ferreira

Following their talk about caring for pets, the Gr. 10 class from Ntsika Secondary School (the Cubs) paid a visit to the Grahamstown SPCA on Thursday 5 March 2015.

The weather looked gloomy but the Cubs were set on brightening up the SPCA animals’ day! Upon their arrival they were greeted by Bobby (he likes to be known just as Bobby). He decided to show the cubs some unusual guests with spiked bodies… African Emperor caterpillars.

After the investigating the weird but wonderful creatures, they were taken on a tour through the kennels where they were shown the cats and dogs of the SPCA. Bobby also told them about the process of how the animals end up at the kennels and the problems they face. The Cubs had a chance to hold some of the kittens and puppies in the kennels and give some love to the older pets as well.

After the tour it was time for Inspector Maloli Dingane to talk to the Cubs about the importance of spaying your pets to ensure that there aren’t more breeding, which usually causes an influx of unwanted pets ending up at the SPCA or even worse: dying from abandonment on the streets. The Cubs told stories of their pets and asked questions about diseases that could be spread by their animals. Inspector Maloli also made a very important point of how important shelter and clean water is for pets.

After the informative talk by Inspector Maloli, one of the Cubs handed over a bag full of canned dog and cat food as a donation to the animals.

The Cubs really enjoyed the visit and learnt a lot. We thank the Grahamstown SPCA for welcoming us with open arms and Inspector Maloli and Bobby for the time that they dedicated to educating the Cubs!
